Back from the Borderline: The impact of insecure attachment and childhood trauma (interview with personality disorder specialist Jen Roters)
Original episode description: Among the symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD), insecurity in one’s sense of self and relationships is often seen as a core feature. Fearing abandonment, alternating between idealizing and devaluing others (splitting), and rapidly shifting between moods, people who identify with BPD seem to share some of the basic elements of individuals with what’s known as an “insecure attachment style.” In this episode, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jen Roters, a doctoral candidate of psychology at Brock University, where she has dedicated over ten years of her life to the study of childhood adversity related to attachment and personality disorder development.

Teaching Assistantships Undergraduate
Undergraduate courses, Brock University, Psychology Department, 2016
For these courses, I have been required to be familiar with all the course material listed (i.e.: readings, lecture materials, assignments, exams, etc.); however, each role had different aspects that I was responsible for.
Introductory Research Design and Statistics
For this course, as a Teaching Assistant, I have led seminars both online and in person, taken up and graded assignments and examination, and proctored examinations. As a Course Coordinator organized and arranged deferred examinations (both online and in person), fielded emails/messages regarding course content, proctored examinations (online), arranged Teaching Assistant coverage for additional office hours, and other course duties as required. Lastly, I also completed a Teaching Apprenticeship where I covered two separate topics in the course and prepared 2 different seminar assignments and examination questions that coincided with the lectures as approved by the instructor. This was delivered over 6 hours of class time across 2 sections of the course, in person.

Quantitative Methods in Social Science Research
This Masters level course focused on how to analyze quantitative data in behaviour analysis, with particular attention given to the opportunities and challenges provided by the use of SPSS. The main objective of this course was to learn how to think more critically and reflectively about data processing and analysis in behaviour analysis. The specific focus in the course was the fundamental statistical concepts that support the application of statistics to research along with the special challenges in applying these concepts via SPSS. Topics covered included:
- descriptive statistics and their utility in evaluating assumptions
- basic group comparison procedures
- bivariate statistics
- introduction to the General Linear Model
- a general-purpose rubric for analyzing experimental and correlational designs
In the scheduled combination lecture/labs, students had a variety of opportunities to actively participate in discussions related to the analytic process. Labs provided actual hands-on experience in using SPSS to carry out statistical analyses. This course introduced the technical aspects of conducting quantitative research, from data processing to statistical analysis and reporting findings to others. As well, the course aided students in developing a critical perspective on how research is conducted from the quantitative perspective, prepared students to conduct research and to be intelligent consumers of research when applied to practice in behaviour analysis.
My role: I ran office hours, marked assignments/exams, and provided support to students regarding homework and assignments/exams.
